In the first half of 2021, polyester resin for powder coatings was affected by the rise in the main raw materials, purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and neopentyl glycol (NPG), and the cost increased significantly. In particular, the impact of several sharp rises in neopentyl glycol and the shortage of isobutyraldehyde has affected the supply of polyester resin companies in the short term.
PTA: In the first half of the year, the overall PTA showed a gradual increase, from 3,700 yuan/ton at the beginning of the year to 5,000 yuan/ton. The increase in upstream crude oil demand and the increase in the price of PX promoted the price increase on the cost side of PTA. PTA as a whole Still facing the situation of destocking, some devices are overhauled, and at the same time, the polyester operating rate of the downstream textile industry is relatively high, and the demand side also has certain support for the PTA price.
NPG: In the first half of the year, neopentyl glycol (NPG) experienced a price of 10,000 yuan/ton from the lowest point at the beginning of the year, and once rose to the highest price of 21,000 yuan/ton. In the last two months, it has maintained around 19,000-20,000 yuan/ton. The main reason is that the upstream supply of isobutyraldehyde cannot meet the shortage caused by the rapid growth of downstream demand in the past two years. The main downstream of isobutyraldehyde are neopentyl glycol and dodecyl alcohol esters. It is estimated that there are still two to three levels of neopentyl glycol. A supply gap of 10,000 tons.
July-August is the traditional "off season" for powder coatings. The demand for polyester resin will decrease to a certain extent. The price of upstream neopentyl glycol may also fall further due to the demand. The price of polyester resin may stabilize and decrease. But at the same time, there is also the possibility that powder coating companies have less early inventory, taking advantage of the "low season" to replenish inventory.
